Lesson 1 Part 5: Scanner Tutorial-HP Scanner

HP Scanner Software: Emphasis Control Tool
Welcome to the HP Scanner overview. This section is intended to provide a brief introduction to HP's DeskScan II software. The information presented herein is in no way meant to supplant the tutorial information for Part 3 located at ScanTips.Com. So at the conclusion of this overview be sure to return, or continue as the case may be to the Scanner tutorial Part 3 for this section.

The Emphasis Control Tool displayed below helps you to visualize the distribution of gray tones in your image. The user is able to change the tonal range of grays in the original image by moving the black diamonds along the curve, or by selecting from one of the preset choices (Lighten Midtones selected below). This is similar to the Curves discussion you'll read about in ScanTips.Com.

The midtones that are so importantly discussed in ScanTips.Com are easily manipulated in this control window. Here one can adjust the three specific midtones: Light, Middle, and Dark. Looking at the control panel to the left and comparing the bar chart on each axis to the alignment of a black diamond, you should be able to see that the Light Midtone adjustment point is the upper right diamond. Similarly the Dark Tone adjustment diamond corresponds to the lowest leftmost diamond. I've purposely put in the colored arrows to help you see this point.
