Lesson 1 Part 5: Scanner Tutorial-HP Scanner

HP Scanner Software: Color Control Tool

Welcome to the HP Scanner overview. This section is intended to provide a brief introduction to HP's DeskScan II software. The information presented herein is in no way meant to supplant the tutorial information for Part 3 located at ScanTips.Com. So at the conclusion of this overview be sure to return, or continue as the case may be to the Scanner tutorial Part 3 for this section.

The Color Adjustment Control Tool displayed below helps you to adjust the overall color or hue of your image. This Tool can be accessed from the drop down menu found under "Tools" at the top of the Standard DeskScan interface. Any adjustments made with this tool will be immediately visible in the preview window.

Basically, Hue can be described as the overall additive color mixing of the three guns that make up the total color of the image: Red, Green and Blue. So in effect your simultaneously varying the value of each gun (RGB) and apply this overall Hue to your entire image. Remember in Scanner Tutorial Part 2 where each gun (RGB) could have a value between 0 and 255? This Color Adjustment tool is just a graphical interface that allows you to adjust these values in a visual way. If your an Adobe Photoshop user, this tool is similar to the "Variations" tool in Photoshop, where you can likewise vary the overall Hue of an image by adding or subtracting a color to the midtones, highlights, or shadows. Hopefully this is all starting to make some sense now!

The Saturation Bar to the left allows you to control the depth or brilliance to which the overall Hue is applied to your image. Maximizing this tool can produce some stunning effects, if so desired. Feel free to experiment with this tool to see for yourself it effects. In the ScanTips.Com tutorial for this section, the Wayne Fulton uses the color adjustment tool to touch up old photographs that have yellowed. This is a valuable use for this tool. Should you be interested you can find Wayne's description of this use under the section titled: Color Correction of Faded Slides on the main entry page of ScanTips.Com.
