Lesson 1 Part 5: Scanner Tutorial-HP Scanner
HP Scanner Software: Highlight/Shadow Control Tools
Welcome to the HP Scanner overview. This section is intended to provide a brief introduction to HP's DeskScan II software. The information presented herein is in no way meant to supplant the tutorial information for Part 3 located at ScanTips.Com. So at the conclusion of this overview be sure to return, or continue as the case may be to the Scanner tutorial Part 3 for this section.
Below is the general control panel for HP's Highlight and Shadow Controls.

This tool is used to adjust the highlights and shadows in an image, and is very similar to manipulating the Histogram as discussed in ScanTips.Com tutorial for this section. Basically, the user selects the highlight button then goes to the image in the preview window and selects the brightest color in the image. This then is the top end or the whitest value, and all other pixels shift accordingly.
Similarly, the user can select the Shadow button and choose the darkest color from the image visible in the preview window. In the DeskScan image below, the circle with crosshairs in the middle of the X29 jet would be a good choice for the Highlight selection as this is the brightest pixel (white) in the image.

This tool used inconjunction with the "Emphasis tool" can greatly control the Histogram displacement of the scanned image as referenced in the ScapTips.Com tutorial on Histograms. The author of ScanTips.Com states that HP DeskScan II software automatically adjust the histrogram, shielding the user from manually controlling it. This is not totally accurate. While the user does not see a pictorial histogram as displayed at ScanTips.Com, the user in effect is adjusting the tonal distribution of grays and midtones by working with the Highlight & Shadow and Emphasis control tools. For more detailed information of these controls, refer to your DeskScan II User's Guide.
