Lesson 1 Part 5: Scanner Tutorial-HP Scanner
HP Scanner Software: Sharpness Control Tool
Welcome to the HP Scanner overview. This section is intended to provide a brief introduction to HP's DeskScan II software. The information presented herein is in no way meant to supplant the tutorial information for Part 3 located at ScanTips.Com. So at the conclusion of this overview be sure to return, or continue as the case may be to the Scanner tutorial Part 3 for this section.
The Sharpening Control Tool displayed below helps you to enhance the detail of your image. Sharpening is especially useful to enhance low resolution scans of photos and drawings, in addition to increasing the clarity of fine detail in the image. The sharpening tool is available from the pop up menu in the DeskScan interface under Custom-Image Type. It should be noted that while the Sharpening tool can enhance the fine detail in an image, there is also the possibility of "over sharpening" an image. Over sharpening an image is apparent when previously undetected blemishes are magnified and discernible. Proper uses of the sharpening can highlight the fine detail in drawings and line art. An example of the Sharpening interface tool is shown below. Scroll below this image to see an example of what sharpening effects can have on an actual image.

Shown below are two images. The blurry Shuttle Liftoff image was scanned at a lower resolution initially (left image below), then customized with the Image Type Sharpening tool. The difference is quite noticeable (sharpening image on right below).
