Lesson 4: Presentation Attributes-The Use of Color

Color Rules

Color Rules to Remember

  1. Design your layout in black and white first and then add color. This way you nail down the good attributes of your design.
  2. Choose only three to four colors for your palette. You should have the background color and two to three others for your fonts and highlights.
  3. Balance your work. Each area of a composition must be offset by other areas of the composition so that no individual area stands out as disharmonious.
  4. Black on pure white is very stressful to the eyes in a web format. Soften the degree of contrast between the text and background to soften visual stress.
  5. Never place dark or medium blue text on a black background. The eye does not have as many blue receptors as other colors and cannot distinguish the boundaries of the shapes.
  6. Principle of Order: Good color schemes must also govern the order and placement of colors in a composition.

How to Use Color

Guide: Directs the viewer's eye across the page

Collaborator: Ties areas of design together

Attention Getter: The viewer's eye is drawn to distinctive or unusual colors

Segregationist: Set areas of design apart from each other

Mood: Creates an overall mood and evokes an emotional response from the viewer

Organizer: Organizes textual information such as headers and footers
