Scanner Tutorial Introduction
Hello, and welcome to this tutorial on the basics of scanning. How many times have you seen an image in a supplementary textbook, found an illustration in an educational trade journal, or seen a magazine cover that would succinctly capture the idea your trying to convey to your students. If your like most teachers, the bells in your head probably go off regularly as you see images which would help to convey your content or crystallize a certain concept. Unfortunately, more times than naught, we fail to incorporate these images into our lessons due to the fact that we find these images in less than favorable formats for classroom use. Time, equipment needed, and money sometimes prohibit our enlarging, reproducing, or creating color transparencies of that "just right" educational image.
If you have faced these challenges before, then fear no more, for at the conclusion of this tutorial, you will have mastered the basic competency skills required to utilize basic scanning software, and as such, be able to capture and create image files that adhere to standard dpi requirements for PowerPoint or Clarisworks presentations. There are some basic rules to follow to keep your file sizes small, but at the optimal quality for your output screen.
By scanning compelling imagery into your electronic presentation, you are capturing that key educational graphic in a digital format and now will be able to use it for years to come. Remember you can scan anything that fits on the scanner screen, even three dimensional objects. But before we get into the content, let's first make sure you have some basic skills required before you proceed.
Basic Prerequisite Skills
Before jumping into the basics of scanning, we first need to make sure your scanner is correctly connected to your computer. You'd hate to be in the thick of the tutorial, only to realize your computer is not communicating with your scanner. So before proceeding, be sure to check your scanner installation manuals, software installation guides, and cable connections for proper working order first. As there are many brands of scanners, it is beyond the scope of this tutorial to instruct you in this area. Before proceeding you should know the following information: where your software is located on your computer, where the power switch is for your scanner, and verify that the SCSI cable is connected properly from your computer to your scanner. Should you need help in this area, seek assistance from someone already familiar with scanner installation, or locate the technical representative who's been assigned to oversee the scanner.
Objective of Scanner Lesson
OK, now we're ready to begin. As mentioned in the introduction, it's the purpose of this lesson to:
- Utilize scanning software to create digital images to be used in your PowerPoint or Clarisworks electronic presentation
- Correctly scan an image according to dpi (dots per inch) requirements set for your presentation
- Scan an image according to pixel requirements set for the presentation, such that the image does not exceed approximately 25% of the presentation screen.
I know some of these terms "dpi" or "pixel" may be slightly strange to you at this point, so be sure to use the Terms link below for a quick reference when needed. You'll get an in-depth understanding of these terms as you work through the lessons found at ScanTips.Com.

The web site: ScanTips.Com provides a comprehensive, sequential, and instructional breakdown of the various skills needed to correctly acquire images via a scanner to your computer. Should your internet connection go down during this lesson, ask the on-site facilitator for assistance accessing ScanTips.Com directly from your hard drive. We've anticipated this potential glitch, and have downloaded this site in advance for your perusal. We did not however, download all external links that ScanTips.Com may reference from within their web site. These external links usually refer to third party vendor web sites, and are not crucial to the instructional information contained at ScanTips.Com
First, read the link titled: Never Used a Scanner Before found in the left hand column at ScanTips.Com entry point. These pages will walk you through the basics of how a scanner works, what types of images or objects can be acquired by your scanner, and what basic controls or options to specify when initially scanning an image (scan type, resolution).
There are three separate sections to this scanner tutorial (part 1, part 2 and part 3). You are now beginning Part 1. Part 1 has 2 practice activities, while Scanner Tutorial Parts 2 and 3 contain 1 practice activity apiece. You'll be provided navigational direction at the bottom of each page in this section, so don't worry. When you've completed the information found at ScanTips.Com titled "Never Used a Scanner Before" return to this page, and proceed on to Lesson1 Part 5: Scanner Tutorial Part 1-practice activity 1 and 2 before advancing to the next section in this tutorial.
