1. Before scanning an image into our system, we first look for the __________________ of our output device, which in this case is the video monitor.

2. Which of the following is not a property of video images:
1. Image size is measured in pixels
2. Image size varies with scanned resolution
3. Image pixels are spaced on paper using specified scaled resolution
4. Image size is modified on screen by resampling

3. Computer icons like all other digital images are composed of rows and columns of __________.

4. A single picture element, or pixel, can contain any value between 0 and 255 for each of the three guns fired at it from the inside the CRT (cathode ray tube) monitor. Thus, a single pixel is merely a three part numeric grouping of numbers containing the values for the red, green, and blue guns (RGB). For example, a pixel with the RGB value of (255, 255, 255) would be represented by the color white. This is because each gun is firing at its maximum strength and Red, Green and Blue are the primary colors of light. So if a pixel element had an RGB value of (0, 0, 0), what color do you think it would represent?

5. When we say an image is 320 X 240 pixels in dimension, we're really saying the image is __________________________________. Hint: elaborate on what each dimension represents.

6. When a digital image is saved it is actually recording the RGB values (between 0 & 255) for every pixel in the 300 pixel wide by 240 pixel tall grid. Remember a digital image is nothing more than a string of numbers representing the value for every pixel in an image. The image itself is organized by rows and columns. Given this scenario, how may pixels then would be in a 320 X 240 image?

7. The _____________(in inches) of the original photograph is equally important to image size as is the scanned resolution in dpi. For it's a combination of these two items that allows you to control how large an image will be upon scanning.

8. A 4X6 inch photograph scanned at 100 dpi will produce an image on screen with the pixel dimensions of:

9. On video monitors __________ ___________ determines image size.

10. A monitor measuring roughly 15 inches along the diagonal has a width of 10.67 inches wide. If its resolution is set to 800 pixels wide X 600 pixels tall, what would be the maximum resolution to scan in an image for display on this screen? Round your answer up to the nearest whole number. This is a key skill to learn: avoidance of "overscanning" an image with more resolution than your monitor can take advantage of.

11. You want to scan a 5X3 inch photograph into your computer to use as a background desktop pattern. If you normal screen resolution is set to 800 X 600 pixels, what vertical image scan dpi would you need to use so that your image covers the entire vertical portion of your screen. Hint: 5 in. wide X 3 in. vertical corresponds to 800 pixels wide by 600 pixels tall.

12. Let's say your LCD or TV monitor projects a screen dimension of 640 pixels wide by 480 pixels high. You want to scan in a 6 X 4 inch illustration such that it takes up 25% of your projector screen real estate (this is one of your instructional objectives for this module). This would require our final image to be 320 X 240 pixels. Study the image below to see how this was determined (merely divide the overall screen dimensions, such that there are 4 equal quadrants). Now given that your final scanned image needs to have dimensions of 320 X 240 pixels, at what dpi should you scan in your 6 X 4 inch illustration? Hint: remember you need to consider image size as well as final resolution. If two separate dpi dimensions are determined, always select the larger of the two.

13. If your scanning in an image for a 1024 X 768 pixel monitor (17 in), would 72 dpi be the optimum resolution to use?

14. As monitor sizes get larger what happens to the optimum dpi setting?

15. Given the same 3 X 5 inch image scanned twice, both times at 82 dpi, how would the image appear different on a 640 X 480 monitor as compared to a 1024 X 768 monitor?
